I attended my first Rebecca Minkoff Runway show during Fashion Week this season. Besides owning a couple of Minkoff bags, I have no affiliation with the designer. But I am part of the Instyle Trendsetters community, and an email inviting select NYC members to the show got sent out. And one got sent to me! As an Instyle Trendsetter, you write reviews for products you have used or tested. Then you are entered into a sweepstakes to win some awesome prizes. Getting offered cool experiences like this is an additional bonus.
I appreciate fashion trends and beautiful clothing/accessories. But I wouldn’t label myself a super fashion forward person who takes great risks in my wardrobe. In a sea of mohawks, fur, and fun, I was a plain Jane in my North Face puffy coat and my Osprey backpack. Yes, I was sporting a humongous travel BOOKBAG while others were carrying designer handbags that are more expensive than our car. (In my defense, I was running straight from the show to work at SNL. I pack a crapload of items to remain productive while we are waiting to go to set.)
This is what I looked like fighting the ridiculous wind as I walked to the show while fashionistas arrived wearing next to nothing either freezing their booties off or getting dropped off in their black SVUs right in front of the venue.
Paparazzi would snap these girls clad in the cutest clothes, and I would try to stay out of their photos by running around them. It was a sad sight. Actually, with my getup, I looked a lot like paparazzi.
Once inside, I noticed a gaggle of people and bright lights crowded around one part of the runway. Random people were shoving their phones into the faces of the attendees sitting in this area. I took a photo just to capture the insanity. Then I realized that everyone was going nuts over socialite Olivia Palermo, actress Kate Bosworth, and model Coco Rocha. See Olivia below!
The only reason I know Olivia Palermo is because…and this is sort of embarrassing…my former roommate and I totally watched The City on MTV. We were so excited about Whitney Port moving from LA to New York because we had just done the same. Yes, we religiously watched a show that probably had completely made up story lines. While Whitney fake-worked at Diane Von Furstenberg and ate at amazing 5-Star restaurants, my roommate and I real-worked at a karaoke bar and Houston’s and ate $1 pizza. Yet, somehow we felt truly connected to Whitney.
Anyway, I remember thinking what a villainess Olivia was in The City. But I probably got tricked by editing and “acting”. Whatever the case, can we agree that her cheekbones are unreal?

Zella Day was the musical act at Rebecca Minkoff. That dress is RM!
After that, I rushed off to SNL.
A day earlier, I realized Melissa McCarthy was the guest host as we got ready to do a sketch. I had no idea she was going to even be on the show, and then as we are about to rehearse, I notice that it’s her right in front of us! She slimmed down a lot, and she was in comfy mode wearing skinny jeans and glasses. You guys, I nearly died. I love Melissa! I would be so ecstatic to work on a movie with her. Anyway, she was so funny and awesome with physical comedy. And she was a true collaborator: “I’m totally open to ideas. Anyone?” Kate McKinnon and Melissa were like besties. It was total girlfriend time! I guess that makes sense. They are in the new Ghostbusters together!
The sketch was pretty hilarious, but it got cut from the live show. I kept hoping it would show up on SNL’s list of “Cut for Time” skits which features sketches online that didn’t make it on TV. I wanted to share it with you guys. Hopefully, next time the sketch will survive! It’s always a good time over at 30 Rock. Everyone’s so chill and nice. Bobby Moynihan is always very friendly and says hello to everyone. One time, we temporarily ran out of chairs for the extras and Kenan Thompson noticed and wanted to make sure everyone was ok. I’m all about positive vibes at the workplace, and I can see how being part of the cast would be a dream job. It’s a pretty good gig for the weekend while having my sights still set on auditioning for principal (speaking) roles.
This is not a seamless transition, but I really want to feature some items I received. I have some friends who love to celebrate every holiday. It’s not just about Christmas. I even get cards and interesting packages in the mail for Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day.
My friend Judy has been delivering Valentine’s goodies for as long as I’ve known her. This was probably back in 2008. The stash included chocolate lips and a sexy camisole/underwear set.
Now that I live in NYC, the presents are no longer hand delivered. But I do love getting mail. One of Judy’s go-to stores is Typo. It carries the most adorable paper goods and gifts. The “Whatever Makes You Happy” tote and “Do Epic Shit” notebook is from Typo. The Thanksgiving card got returned to her, so it was a lovely belated read when she sent it with the Valentine’s package. Both my friends Taryn and Judy write down quotes from the day into their notebooks, and Judy goes back to her records and adds her favorite quotes of ours to the cards. It’s the best!
Do you guys have any favorite stores for gifts? I’m an Amazon girl myself, but TJ Maxx and Marshall’s have some awesome cards, notebooks, accessories, and beauty products. Alright, I’m off to write in my “Do Epic Shit” book. It’s a process. After writing and planning the epic shit, then you DO the epic shit. 😉
